Review of my stay at Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos
Since the beginning of my career as a travel advisor, I've heard of Grand Velas Resorts. They are one of the few all-inclusive resorts that are part of Virtuoso, meaning that they consistently meet a very high standard, but it also means that clients who book the resort with me receive some added perks. Until this recent trip, I didn't quite understand what set Grand Velas apart from other all-inclusive resorts, but now I understand.
Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos feels like the kind of resort you choose when you want the ease of an all-inclusive stay, but not the scale or noise of a massive property. While at the resort, I felt like it was also the kind of resort a person would love if they think they don't like all-inclusive resorts.
This is not the place for a packed daily schedule or a high-energy party scene. It is better suited to slow mornings, long meals, pool time, ocean views, spa appointments, and the pleasure of not having to make too many decisions. They do have a list of activities each day (yoga, aqua aerobics, tequila tasing, etc), many of which take place next door at Grand Velas (the big one).

The first impression is calm and intimate
The arrival experience set the tone right away. Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos does not feel like a sprawling resort where you need a map, a tram, and a full day to understand the layout. It feels compact in the best way. Everything is close enough to reach easily, which makes the whole stay feel less rushed. My only confusion was initially understanding how to get the pool, but it was easy after that. The resort also has exchange privileges with the larger Grand Velas next door (but not the other way around), so someone is always ready to take you there on a two-minute golf cart ride.
The design is modern and warm, with a lot of neutral tones, clean lines, and open views toward the water. It does not try too hard. Instead, the property leans into what Cabo already does well: sun, sea, dramatic light, and that dry desert-meets-ocean setting.
What I noticed most was the quiet. There were conversations at the pool, music in certain spaces, and the normal rhythm of a resort, but it never felt crowded or chaotic during my visit. That small-scale feeling is a big part of the appeal.

Easy navigation One you understand the layout, you can move from room to restaurant to pool without feeling like you are crossing a campus. There is a lush garden with a koi pond in the middle of the resort, which is a pleasant part of the walk to the pool or restaurants.
For me, that sense of ease made the first day better. I did not feel like I had to “figure out” the resort. I could just arrive, unpack, and relax.
The rooms feel designed for staying in
The suite was one of the best parts of my stay. The room felt spacious, calm, and comfortable, with the kind of layout that makes you want to enjoy it rather than treat it as a place to sleep between activities.
The style matched the rest of the resort: modern, soft, and understated. Nothing felt overly themed. The room was built around comfort, with generous seating, a strong indoor-outdoor feel, and plenty of space to spread out.
The bathroom area also felt like a real feature. At resorts like this, the bathroom can make a big difference because it becomes part of the daily ritual. Getting ready for dinner, coming back from the pool, or taking a slow morning all feel better when the room works well.

Dining is a major part of the experience
I expected the food to be good, but the dining experience became one of the main reasons I would recommend the resort. Grand Velas properties are known for taking food seriously, and that came through during my stay. I've written a few blog posts about food at other resorts (Le Blanc and Palmaïa), and I definitely add this to top of my list of favorites!
The best part was the lack of compromise that sometimes comes with all-inclusive resorts. Meals did not feel like an afterthought or a buffet-only situation. The food felt considered, and the atmosphere around meals felt relaxed but elevated. The wine selections were also good!
Breakfast was especially easy to love. A good resort breakfast sets the tone for the day, and here it felt unrushed. Coffee, fresh fruit, pastries, eggs, local flavors, and ocean light are a pretty strong way to start a morning. Breakfast in the restaurant starts at 7:00, so if that's late for you, you can also have in-room dining much earlier. The "green omelette" that I had was one of the best omelettes I've ever had!
Lunch leaned into the kind of food you want in Cabo: bright, fresh, and not too heavy if you are heading back to the pool. Dinner felt more like an event, but still comfortable. I liked that I could dress up a bit without feeling like the evening had become formal or stiff.
The drinks also felt in line with the resort’s overall style. This is a good place for a poolside cocktail, a glass of wine with dinner, or something refreshing after a sunny afternoon.
A few dining tips from my stay:
Make dinner plans early if the resort offers reservations during your dates.
Take advantage of the exchange privileges with Grand Velas, where you can experience their Michelin Star restaurant, Cocina de Autor, as well as other great options.
Ask staff what they recommend instead of only ordering familiar dishes.
Leave room in your schedule for long meals.
Do not skip breakfast if you enjoy a slower start.
The biggest compliment I can give the dining is that it did not feel like I was eating at the same resort every day. The meals gave the stay structure and variety without making anything feel complicated. Each restaurant has its own distinctive ambience, so you feel like you've entered a new locaiton and experience.
The pool is the center of the day
At a resort like this, the pool area matters. It is where you read, nap, order a drink, decide whether to swim, and lose track of time in the best possible way.
The pool scene at Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos matched the rest of the property. It was calm, polished, and easy to settle into. Each time I arrived at the pool, I was greeted by a pool attendant to set me up with a chair, umbrella, towels, water, and a menu. The chairs were comfortable, the service was attentive all day, and the setting made it hard to leave. The Pacific Ocean backdrop gives the whole area that unmistakable Los Cabos feeling.
This is not a resort where I would plan every hour around activities. I would build the day around the pool, a long lunch, maybe a spa treatment, and dinner. That rhythm fits the property. As I mentioned before, there is a daily list of activities (see a sample below), if that is your sort of thing.
The beach directly in front of Grand Velas Boutique Hotel is not swimmable, but there are swimmable beaches nearby. When in Cabo, I treat the beach and water more as as scenery rather than the main swimming activity. If ocean swimming is essential for your trip, we can discuss your options!
Oh, I have to mention the food. What stood out to me were the Mediterranean Bowl and Parmesan Truffle Fries. Friends ordered tacos and sliders, and everyone was happy with their choices. I love dining in a restaurant, but pool lunch in a setting like this is one of my favorite things!
Service feels polished without being stiff
Service can make or break a luxury resort stay. Too little attention feels frustrating. Too much can feel formal or intrusive. What I liked here was that the service felt present but relaxed. It was quite consistent, whether I was at the pool, in a restaurant, or just walking through the lobby.
Staff members seemed comfortable reading the pace of the stay. At the pool, service was available without constant interruption. At meals, the pacing felt smooth. Around the property, people were warm and helpful without making every interaction feel scripted.
That makes a difference when the whole point of the trip is to relax. You do not want to chase down basics, but you also do not want to feel managed. Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos found a good middle ground during my visit.
The smaller size likely helps. A boutique property can feel more personal because staff and guests cross paths naturally. After a short time, the resort starts to feel familiar.

Poolside service was easy and pleasant.

This is one of the reasons I think the resort works well for special occasions. Anniversaries, milestone birthdays, honeymoons, and quiet celebrations all fit the mood. The property feels special without becoming showy.
The location works best if you want a resort-focused trip
Los Cabos has a lot to offer, from sailing and snorkeling to golf, restaurants, art walks, and day trips. I personally always love a boat ride to The Arches (or El Arco or Land's End). The one on this trip included a nice amount of time for swimming in a very calm area.
One of my first all-inclusive clients said they wanted to go somewhere that they would not experience "FOMO" by mainly staying at the resort. When you stay at a resort like this one, I think that is a relevant request! While there are some great things to do in the area, I think it's best to be very selective in how you might spend any time away from the resort.

What I would pack and plan before going
You do not need to overthink packing, but a few choices will make the stay smoother.
For daytime, bring resort wear that works for heat, sun, and pool time. Think swimsuits, cover-ups, sandals, sunglasses, and breathable fabrics. The sun in Cabo can be intense, so sun protection matters. A hat and sunscreen are not optional!
For dinner, I would pack a few elevated but comfortable outfits. The resort feels refined, so it is nice to have clothing that fits the setting without being too formal. Linen, dresses, collared shirts, nicer sandals (closed-toed shoes for men), and light layers all work well.
I would also bring:
A book or Kindle
A small beach or pool bag
A reusable water bottle if you like having one nearby
Simple evening shoes
A light sweater or wrap for breezy nights or air conditioning
Any preferred toiletries or skincare for dry, sunny weather
