The Best All-Inclusive Resort for Vegans & Vegetarians (and Everyone Who Loves Great Food): Why Palmaïa: The House of AïA Belongs on Your List
If you searched "best all-inclusive resort for vegans" and landed here, you're not alone — that exact question is what led a fellow traveler (and former NYC colleague) I met at the resort straight to Palmaïa: The House of Aïa in Riviera Maya, Mexico. It's the resort I recommend most often to food-driven travelers, and not just vegans. If you love creative cooking, thoughtful cocktails, a spa that actually does something for you, and wellness programming that goes beyond a yoga mat on the beach, this is the resort that keeps coming up in my client conversations — and for good reason.
Why Palmaïa is the Best All-Inclusive Resort for Vegans
Most all-inclusive resorts treat plant-based dining as an afterthought: a sad grain bowl tucked at the end of the buffet. Palmaïa built its entire culinary program around it. It was the first resort in the world to offer exclusive plant-based menus at every one of its dining venues, and every suite is vegan-friendly — no animal products used in the materials or furnishings, either.
That commitment shows up across six distinct restaurants and food concepts, each with its own personality:
Su Casa — the resort's main restaurant, known for open-air ocean views and a breakfast worth waking up for
LEK — Mexican flavors done with real technique
UME — Asian-inspired plates
Mar de Olivo — Mediterranean and Italian
Charly's Vegan Tacos — a food truck dedicated entirely to plant-based tacos, and a guest favorite
Plantissa — a health café and juice bar for smoothies, cold-pressed juice, and lighter bites between meals
Even non-vegan travelers rave about the food here — dishes like soy-marinated watermelon poke bowls and smoked carrot toast aren't "vegan substitutes," they're just genuinely good plates that happen to be plant-based. That's the detail that turns skeptics into fans by day two.
This resort really keeps getting better. On my most recent visit, I felt like the food was better than ever. It seems that after a few years of being open, the menus are more refined, and the food is more delicious and artful (not that it was ever lacking). As a meat eater who loves beautiful vegetarian or vegan food, I appreciated the shift of focus to plant-based food, while also having animal protein options when I wanted them.
It's Not Just About the Food
Palmaïa markets itself as a wellness resort, and it earns that label. The property sits inside 400 hectares of untouched jungle at the southern edge of Playa del Carmen, with 700 meters of private beach and no public road leading directly to it — you access it through a neighboring development and a golf cart ride in, which gives the whole place a hidden, members-only feel.
The spa and rituals: Atlantis, the Spa in the Jungle, blends jungle-inspired architecture with natural cenote pools and climate-controlled treatment "temples." Guests can book a cenote dip, a traditional Temazcal (Mayan sweat lodge) ceremony, sound healing sessions, and nightly beach fire ceremonies led by local practitioners. This isn't spa-as-amenity — it's spa as the point.
The programming: Palmaïa's wellness philosophy runs on four pillars — Nutrition, Wellness Programming, Music, and Personal Growth — delivered through things like gong baths, cacao ceremonies, and guided sound healing. Every guest is paired with a "Nomadic Guide" who helps curate the stay around what you actually want, rather than handing you a generic activities sheet. On my recent stay, we participated in several yoga classes (also missed some classes in favor of reading books by the pool or beach). The class that stood out to me was more on the "personal growth" side, led by Balder, the shaman. It was a very casual and interesting group activity about the connection of all people, and it was beautiful and memorable, also creating community for the remainder of our stay (speaking to people from the class as we would see them).
The sustainability story: No plastic water bottles anywhere on property, solar power, biodegradable bathroom amenities, and a stated goal of becoming one of the first carbon-neutral resorts in the world. For travelers who care where their vacation dollars go, that matters.
Good to Know Before You Book
Summer months can bring seaweed to the beach — not unique to Palmaïa, but worth knowing if that's a dealbreaker for you. Even so, I've never seen it be bad at Palmaïa. During our stay, one day was worse that others, but most days, the water was clear and beautiful!
Pack bug repellent for jungle-adjacent evenings and for sitting by the pool. They supply repellent in the room, but you might want your own.
Rooms are oceanfront across eight low-rise buildings, so every suite gets a view
Book It Through a Virtuoso Advisor (that's me) — and Get More Than a Reservation
Palmaïa is a Virtuoso preferred partner, which means booking through a Virtuoso-affiliated advisor (like me, through Pilkington Travels) unlocks perks you simply can't get booking direct or through a generic OTA — things like room upgrades when available, resort credit you can put toward spa treatments or dining, and enhanced amenities on arrival. Exact benefits shift seasonally, but you'll never get less by booking with a Virtuoso advisor, and you'll usually get meaningfully more.
Beyond the perks, you get a planner who already knows this resort — not from a brochure, but from experience. I've stayed at Palmaïa four or five times myself, I've built a genuine relationship with the property over the years, and I've met the owner in person on more than one occasion. That means I know which suite category is worth the upgrade, which rituals to book first, how to time the Temazcal ceremony, and how to build the rest of a Riviera Maya itinerary around it if you want to extend the trip.
Thinking about Palmaïa for an anniversary, a wellness reset, or your next plant-based escape? Reach out and I'll put together a proposal built around what you actually want out of the trip — plus every Virtuoso perk currently available for your travel dates.
